Using FileZilla
The first time you run FileZilla you will see this screen:
Left Click on File (Red
Oval) to open selection box. Then slide your mouse pointer to select Site Manager and left Click to bring up the following screen.
Now left Click the New Site button (Green
Oval). You will now be able to fill in the Site details area of the screen.
On the Site Manager Screen (image above), you need to fill in the New Site Name
(Red
Rectangle), the Host:
(Green
Rectangle), Logontype:
(Lavender
Rectangle), User:
(Blue
Rectangle) and Password:
(Yellow
Rectangle).
If you are a Free Space User, continue on. If you are a Purchased Domain and Hosting User, jump down to the heading Purchased Domain and Hosting Users.
Free Space Users:
If you are using free space provided by your Internet Service Provider use YourPageName for the Site Name
(Red
Rectangle). The Host:
(Green
Rectangle) is the URL of your ISP. For example: www.earthlink.com, www.mindspring.com, or
www.AOL.com.
The Logontype: (Lavender
Rectangle) needs to be changed. Left click on the little down arrow at the right end of the lavender rectangle and select Normal from the drop down menu.
The User: (Blue
Rectangle) is the text before the @ sign in your main email account – User@AOL.com, and your Password:
(Yellow
Rectangle) is the login password you selected when you created your account with your ISP.
If you are unsure of your Host Name, User ID or Password contact your ISP for this information. Some AOL users will have a Host Name of www.home.AOL.com or a variation. Contact AOL support for the address you should use.
Now left Click Connect (Red
Oval) and continue reading at the heading below, Either Type of Space Users.
Purchased Domain and Hosting Users:
If you have purchased a domain and set up a hosting account, the Site Name
(Red
Rectangle) can be just the name of your site or you can use YourPageName, something meaningful to name the connection.
The Host: (Green
Rectangle) is the URL of your website. You do not use the http:// in the host name. Just
www.yourdomain.com.
The Logontype: (Lavender
Rectangle) needs to be changed. Left click on the little down arrow at the right end of the lavender rectangle and select Normal from the drop down menu.
Your web host should have sent you your User: (Blue
Rectangle) and Password:
(Yellow
Rectangle) when you opened your hosting account. Enter these in their respective fields. Then left Click Connect
(Red Oval).
Either Type of Space User:
FileZilla will now connect to the server and display the screen below. Your website or webspace will be on the Right side of the screen
(Green
Rectangle) called Remote Site and your computer called Local Site will be on the Left
(Red
Rectangle) side of the screen.
Note to Free Space Users. You will not have all the selections in the right window. You will have a WWW or public_html which is all you need.
Under Filename below the red box I have drawn above, find and double left click the hard drive name where you keep your web images. This will open your folder list. Continue to double left click on the appropriate folder until you get to where you have your web images stored.
Under Filename below the green box I have drawn above, find and double left click on www under filename. Your files go into the www folder on the remote server. If you do not have a www folder use the public_html folder instead.
You can put your files directly into the www folder, but I suggest you create a folder on the remote server called webimages. This way all your web images will be in one place on the server and you can create other folders for other areas of your website or other uses.
To create a folder on your remote site, move your mouse to a white area in the Filename box of the Remote Site and Right Click. In the box that opens select Create Directory and Left Click. A new box will open with New Folder highlighted (selected). Just type the name you want for your folder (webimages) and the New Folder name will be replaced with what you typed. Then click OK. You will see your new folder appear in the Filename box of the Remote Site.
Note: Folders and Directories are the same thing.
All of this only takes a few seconds and you only have to do it once. In fact, you will only have to set this whole system up once. FileZilla will remember the folders and open to them the next time you start the transfer program.
Now, navigate to the webimages directory by double clicking on it.
Now you should have your local site images folder open in the left window, and your remote site webimages folder showing in right window.
It will look like this:
At this point you are ready to transfer your images to the web. But, before you do that you want to make sure that every time you start FileZilla and open the YourPage connection, the program automatically opens to the right folders on both your computer and the remote server.
In order to make sure you always open FileZilla to the relevant folders on your computer click on the advanced tab on the site manager.
That’s, File > Site Manager.
On the advanced screen enter the following locations:
For Default Local: C:\webimages\ (if that is where you keep your images)
For Default Remote: /www/webimages/
Note: The direction of the slashes is different.
It will look like this:
Then Click OK. This way you will not have to search through you hard drive every time you want to move images to the web.
You are now ready to move files from your computer to the web. Just highlight the files that you want to move by clicking on them and then drag them to the remote site filename box.
Note: You can also just double click on a file to transfer it to the web.
Hint: You can select all your files and move them to the web all at once by single clicking on the top image in the left screen and then scrolling down to the last file and clicking on it with the shift key held down. You can also select individual files by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on different files.
Then drag all the selected files into the remote site filename box.
After you have moved your files and/or images to the server, click on close to exit FileZilla.
That wasn’t very hard was it?
Many people avoid transferring images with a FTP program because they never spend the time to learn these simple steps.
You are now able to upload new pages and/or images for your website any time you want.
Note: You can move files from the remote site to your computer in the same way.
